  • Lisa Tucker: The Cure for Modern Life: A Novel

Lisa Tucker: The Cure for Modern Life: A Novel
I really enjoyed The Cure for Modern Life. It raised some interesting issues and grounded them in well-developed characters. The characters truly seemed to follow their own course, rather than preaching some agenda. And I managed to read it in three days - which is nothing short of a miracle. (****)

  • Stefanie Wilder-Taylor: Naptime Is the New Happy Hour: And Other Ways Toddlers Turn Your Life Upside Down

Stefanie Wilder-Taylor: Naptime Is the New Happy Hour: And Other Ways Toddlers Turn Your Life Upside Down
A hybrid of girlfriend gossip-meets-girlfriend advice that's good for the soul. It's not really a how-to or a manual, but she does have some good suggestions mixed in with the humor. But who are we really kidding? What we're really after is the humor. At least I am. Because I can find all the advice I could ever need - and more. way. WAY more. - on the internet. Whereas finding good humor that steps over the line every so often with a well-placed swear word every now and then, well, that's much harder to find. And if it's one thing that mom of toddlers need, it's a good laugh. (*****)

  • Andy Steiner: Spilled Milk: Breastfeeding Adventures and Advice from Less-Than Perfect Moms

Andy Steiner: Spilled Milk: Breastfeeding Adventures and Advice from Less-Than Perfect Moms
A great read for any Mom preparing to tackle breastfeeding. It's not a guide, per se, but more like the conversations your best girlfriends would have (or are having) about their time in the trenches. It's non-judgmental, and does a balanced job of presenting both the tough and triumphant moments of breastfeeding. A great present for your friend's baby shower. (****)

  • Editors of Parenting Magazine: Baby Must-Haves: The Essential Guide to Everything from Cribs to Bibs

Editors of Parenting Magazine: Baby Must-Haves: The Essential Guide to Everything from Cribs to Bibs
Overall, I would recommend this guide for first-time parents who want to get an idea of what items they'll need prior to doing the nitty-gritty research about which brands to choose, and for those of us who'd like a refresher course before hitting the slopes again. But save your real research for the internet, consumer-reviews, and your circle of other mom-friends. (**)

  • Jenny Minton: The Early Birds : A Mother's Story for Our Times

Jenny Minton: The Early Birds : A Mother's Story for Our Times
Overall, this is an interesting read for any mother. I've cried, come close to being pissed off, and then quickly forgiven the author because of her deeply honest approach. The title is too lighthearted for the subject matter, but I think it's a worthwhile read. Check out my review for more details. (****)

  • Susan Straub: Reading with Babies, Toddlers, and Two's

Susan Straub: Reading with Babies, Toddlers, and Two's
If you need a reason to go spend more money at a book store, this book is perfect for you! See more detailed info in my review. (***)

  • Peter Kuhns: Blogosphere : Best of Blogs

Peter Kuhns: Blogosphere : Best of Blogs
I can't give it less than three stars, 'cause I'm IN IT! It's really a compendium of blogs and synopses of their authors and contents. A blog roll in print. (***)

Banana's Reads

  • : The Little Red Hen (Little Golden Book)

The Little Red Hen (Little Golden Book)
Forever a classic. I remember this story from my childhood, and my mother from hers. The repetitive language lets Hannah read along with me and the lesson is instructive to say the least: If you don't help, you don't enjoy the rewards. (*****)

  • Joy Cowley: Gracias The Thanksgiving Turkey (Scholastic Bookshelf)

Joy Cowley: Gracias The Thanksgiving Turkey (Scholastic Bookshelf)
Cute storyline about Thanksgiving that isn't at all focused on the history of it. Plus, a pet that doesn't get eaten. A few Spanish vocabulary words are a good bonus. (****)

  • Spike Lee: Please, Baby, Please

    Spike Lee: Please, Baby, Please
Great art and scenarios that both parents and kids will relate to. Throw in the fact that the family is black (and that's not the "theme" of the story) and you win my vote. Hannah asks for a second read every time. I think she relates to the curly hair. (*****)

Faburealitastic!

I'm so happy, I'm making up words!!

We just had our anatomy scan this morning, and I couldn't be more pleased.  Baby Sister is still decidedly female, and this time, instead of being in shock, I'm all smiles.  I don't know if it's directly correlated to the quality of the images, or just the time I've had to ponder things and to feel her move around more, but whatever the reason I feel infinitely more upbeat, happy, and connected with this pregnancy and baby.

Baby Sister is super active, challenging the tech to hone her skills (which I must say were impressive) and catch even the merest flicker of a picture.  The results were mind-blowing.  She's perfect.  And the technology they have is just... awesome.  We got the most fantastic pictures.  And then... THEN... she did some 3D pictures without even telling us that's what she was doing until they popped up on the screen.

I have to admit that in the past I've been somewhat blase about the idea of 3D pictures.  I had a take it or leave it mentality about them, and since most doctors don't use them for diagnostic purposes, I chalked them up to superfluous... ity?  See: more made up word!

But now I've seen the light.  Come play peek-a-boo with my newest baby daughter:

I'm over the moon.  And so freakin' blessed I can hardly stand it.

Thank you so much to all of you, because even though I hardly talk about it anymore, I do have my moments of darkness and doubt.  And knowing you all are out there is what gets me through.  I wishing each of you your own unspeakable joys.

Congrats!
love your new word.

Ok, I'm tearing up here, and feeling a smile within my heart to see your beautiful baby girl. I know what it's taken to get you here, and I'm glad that you'll have not only 1, but 2 happy endings.

I know it's cheesy, but HUGS to you.

Excellent, beautiful pictures! Congratulations, girl.

YAY! What gorgeous pictures! Glad you are feeling so good about it all.

Oh how wonderful! Great pictures! Congratulations!

Is it just me, or in the high-res one is she SMILING? I am. Congratulations on her being a BABY. XOX

Oh congrats Julia - "Baby Sister" is adorable! I'm so happy for you that you've been blessed with another healthy baby.

In the 3D picture she looks a lot like Hannah, don't you think?

Congratulations! It's so exciting. I wish they'd had the 3D thing when I was pregnant with mine. Wow!

She DOES look like she's smiling! What a cutie already. :)

Baby Sister looks like Hannah, I agree. And she's so beautiful! I am so thrilled for you guys. (Now I don't have to ask my latest question, which was what is on your list of boy's names, just in case.) Congratulations, again!

It DOES look like she's smiling in the high-res 3D shot, doesn't it? We had one of those as well (Level 2 ultrasound + fetal echocardiogram) and what blew my mind was...you could tell that the baby looked like my husband - spitting image of all his little kid pictures fro m30 years earlier. We didn't find out baby was a boy until he arrived (I was convinced he'd be a girl), but my mother took one look at the picture at 20 weeks and said, "Start thinking of boys' names."

So glad to hear all is going well. =)

Wow! What a great image. And what great news! So, so happy for you.

I know this about the lamest question, but when looking at an ultrasound picture what does one look for when determining boy parts from girl parts?

Tree,

Usually, those pictures are taken from underneath - as if the kid were sitting on a Xerox machine. The easiest answer is that boy parts protrude (including the berries, not just the twig) and girl parts are more of an absence than anything else.

Oh I'm so happy for you :-)

You know, the darkness and doubt don't ever really go away ... I think it just gets easier to carry them with you, over time.

Congratulations again :-)

Happy Day!! Loved this entry-we could feel your happiness, your excitement and your love. Continued prayers coming from me to you!

I'm just over the moon for you right now. I can't tell you how much joy those pictures brought to me, knowing how much joy they brought to you.

Baby Sister is beautiful. May you continue to be blessed.

I can't believe how fantastic those pictures are - I'm really happy for you! It's so exciting!

The pics are fantabulous!! I agree with the 3D thing...until we got a glimpse yesterday at our ultrasound, I really could have cared less. But once you see them, wow!

Congrats on the great scan!

I've got a big, cheesy smile on my face right now!

Gorgeous! I'm so happy for you.

Oh, Julia! So, so excited for you! Congratulations to you all and continued blessings and joy throughout this pregnancy!

Thanks for answering my question...I have wondered that for years and years.

Yeah!!! Awesome!!! and Congratulations!!!

Baby sister has such a beautiful *smile*!

May I suggest the name "Felicia" which means "happiness"? Or Aliza which means joyful?

She is gorgeous!

What amazing pictures!!! Since I didn't get in on the earlier naming posts may I suggest
Phoebe
Claire
Sarah
Emily ( I particularily love the idea of Hannah and Emily)
